What is a Bistro?
In France, a bistro is not a grand, formal restaurant. It is something warmer, more approachable. The word itself evokes comfort: generous portions of well-crafted food, served in a relaxed setting where friends and families gather.
In Lyon, France’s culinary capital, bouchons are the most celebrated bistros. They are known for their authentic dishes, hearty flavors, and an atmosphere where everyone feels at home.
At Le Bouchon, we bring that same spirit to Colombo. Our bistro is not about haute cuisine or extravagant formality – it is about real French food, enjoyed at leisure, in a setting that is relaxed yet full of character.
Simplicity, Tradition, and Flavour
Our menu celebrates the timeless recipes that made French bistros beloved around the world. Each dish tells a story, rooted in tradition, among our signatures, you will find:
- Cheese and Charcuterie boards – the perfect way to begin a meal, ideally paired with a glass of wine.
- Escargots de Bourgogne – tender snails baked in garlic butter, a true French delicacy.
- Soupe à l’oignon – caramelised onions, beef broth and wine topped with bread and cheese
- Cassoulet – a rustic dish of haricot beans, sausage, pork belly, and confit chicken, gently spiced with garlic and thyme.
- Fondue Savoyarde – melted Alpine cheeses, shared at the table in true convivial fashion.
- Coq au Vin – chicken braised with wine, mushrooms, and herbs, a classic of French country cooking.
- Gratin Dauphinois – creamy baked potatoes, indulgent and satisfying.
- Quenelle au Crevettes – a light shrimp dumpling baked in béchamel sauce, a Lyonnais speciality.
And for dessert, the unmistakable French touch:
- Crème Brûlée, with its golden caramel crust.
- Tarte Tatin, the famous upside-down apple tart born of a happy accident.
- Crêpe Suzette, flambéed with orange and liqueur for a dramatic finish.

The Atmosphere
Our bistro is simple and welcoming, with typical French décor on the walls and an open, covered space that feels both relaxed and connected. The setting is intentionally unpretentious – a place to unwind, laugh, and enjoy good food in good company. Nestled within La Maison de Colombo, Le Bouchon is truly a little corner of France in the heart of Colombo.
A Bientôt
We know that fine dining in Colombo often means a very expensive international table. Le Bouchon is different. We want to be approachable, friendly, and authentic – a place you can visit out of curiosity and returnto because it feels like home.
At a French bistro, the joy lies not only on the plate but also in the atmosphere. It is about discovering something new without intimidation, and realizing that French cuisine can be both elegant and relaxed.
If you have ever been curious about French food, Le Bouchon is the perfect starting point. Come for the escargots, stay for the cassoulet, finish with a crêpe suzette – and above all, enjoy the warm spirit of the French bistro brought to Colombo.
And the final French touch: as our owner, Christophe Coucaud, often says – “We do not want to surprise our guests with a 34% tax and service charge at the end. We want the bill itself to be a pleasant surprise – that’s why all our prices are net, inclusive of tax and service.
Bon Appétit!
